The Schlage HL6-9070 combines HL6 push/pull hardware with the Schlage L Series heavy duty mortise lock in the 9070 classroom function (ANSI F05). The latchbolt is retracted by the paddle from either side unless the outside paddle is locked by key, and it is unlocked again from outside by key.

Locking from the corridor side is what defines a classroom function. Staff secure the door with a key from outside without opening it or stepping in, so an occupied room can be locked down in seconds from the hallway. There is no thumbturn, which means the locked state stays under keyholder control and cannot be changed by anyone inside the room.

An auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed, and the inside paddle is always free for immediate egress regardless of lock state. The rest is standard HL6 mortise: a 3/4 inch throw stainless steel latchbolt, an ASA strike, a UL Listing for 3 hour fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft, and dampened paddle action giving a proven 50 percent quieter operation than the previous generation, in 10 finishes including antimicrobial 626AM and 630AM.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 9070 mean?
It is the Schlage mortise lock function: 9070 classroom, ANSI F05. The outside paddle is locked and unlocked by key from outside.
How is this different from the 9060?
Which side holds the key. The 9060 apartment entrance is locked by key from the inside. The 9070 classroom is locked and unlocked by key from the outside, so the door is secured from the corridor.
Can I lock the room without going in?
Yes, and that is the point of the function. Turn the key from the corridor side and the outside paddle stops retracting the latch, with no need to open the door or step inside.
Can people inside still get out?
Yes. The inside paddle is always free for immediate egress, whatever the lock state. Locking only stops entry from outside.
Is there a thumbturn?
No. The 9070 has no thumbturn, so occupants cannot change the locked state. Control stays with whoever holds the key. If you want the door lockable from inside without a key, look at the 9050 entrance and office function instead.
Does it need a cylinder?
Yes. The 9070 is key operated from outside, so a mortise cylinder is part of the opening. Tell us your keyway and whether the cylinder should be keyed to an existing system and we will confirm it with the order.
Which HL6 mortise function do I want?
9010 passage never locks. 9040 is bath and bedroom privacy, thumbturn only. 9050 entrance and office locks by key or thumbturn. 9060 apartment entrance locks by key from inside. 9070 classroom locks by key from outside.
What does the auxiliary latch do?
It deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed, so the latch cannot be pushed back out of the strike from outside.
Is it handed?
The hardware is non-handed and mounts in five positions - handles down, handles up, one up and one down, or pointing away from the latch. Note that the E3 and E4 horizontal engraving codes are handed, so specify right or left hand for those.
Can it go on a fire door?
Yes. It is UL Listed for 3 hour fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft on single labeled metal or wood doors.
