The Schlage HL6-9040 combines HL6 push/pull hardware with the Schlage L Series heavy duty mortise lock in the 9040 bath and bedroom privacy function (ANSI F22). The latchbolt is retracted by the paddle from either side unless the outside paddle has been locked by the inside thumbturn, which makes it the mortise answer for patient bathrooms, staff restrooms, and any room that needs privacy without a key.
Privacy releases the way it should in a healthcare setting. Actuating the inside paddle or simply closing the door unlocks the outside paddle, so a room cannot be left accidentally locked out, and the inside paddle is always free for immediate egress. For emergencies, remove the emergency button on the outside, insert the furnished emergency thumbturn into the access hole, and rotate to release.
Underneath it is the same L Series mortise case as the rest of the HL6 mortise line: a 3/4 inch throw stainless steel latchbolt, an ASA strike standard, and a UL Listing for 3 hour fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft. Dampened paddle action gives a proven 50 percent quieter operation than the previous generation, in 10 finishes including antimicrobial 626AM and 630AM.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does 9040 mean?
- It is the Schlage mortise lock function: 9040 bath and bedroom privacy, ANSI F22. The outside paddle locks from an inside thumbturn, with no key or cylinder involved.
- How does someone get in during an emergency?
- From the outside, remove the emergency button, insert the emergency thumbturn that is furnished with the lock into the access hole, and rotate it to release the outside paddle.
- Can the room get locked by accident?
- No. Privacy releases automatically - actuating the inside paddle or simply closing the door unlocks the outside paddle, so the room cannot be left locked with nobody in it.
- Can someone always get out?
- Yes. The inside paddle is always free for immediate egress, regardless of the thumbturn position.
- How is this different from the PL7 and PL8?
- The lock case. The PL7 and PL8 are the tubular privacy versions of HL6 push/pull hardware, with the thumbturn on the push side or pull side respectively. The HL6-9040 puts the same privacy idea on the L Series mortise case, which brings the 3/4 inch latchbolt, the ASA strike, and the 4 ft by 10 ft fire door listing.
- Is it handed?
- The hardware is non-handed and mounts in five positions - handles down, handles up, one up and one down, or pointing away from the latch. Note that the E3 and E4 horizontal engraving codes are handed, so specify right or left hand for those.
- Can it go on a fire door?
- Yes. It is UL Listed for 3 hour fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft on single labeled metal or wood doors.
- What are the antimicrobial finishes?
- 626AM satin chrome and 630AM satin stainless steel, the antimicrobial versions of the two most commonly specified finishes. Both are common choices on patient bathroom hardware.
- Will it fit my door?
- It is made for 1-3/4 inch doors on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Other thicknesses are available from Schlage on request, so contact us if your door differs.
