The Schlage HL6-2 is tubular push/pull hardware with a passage function on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Its short throw angle lets the door be opened with an easy push or pull, even when hands are not free - the reason it became standard equipment in hospitals, clinics, and labs where staff move through doors carrying trays, charts, and equipment.
The redesigned HL Series adds dampened paddle action on both depression and snap back, giving a proven 50 percent quieter paddle operation than the previous generation in both push and pull directions. That matters anywhere operational noise is disruptive: patient care areas, work stations where concentration counts, busy hallways, chapels and auditoriums, and administrative offices.
The latchbolt is 1/2 inch throw stainless steel, retracted by the paddle from either side, with the inside paddle always free for immediate egress. The hardware is non-handed, mounts in six positions, and is UL Listed for 3 hour fire doors up to 4 ft by 8 ft. Choose from 10 finishes including antimicrobial 626AM and 630AM, plus strike, engraving, and option suffixes.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does the -2 in HL6-2 mean?
- The backset. HL6-2 is the 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the Schlage standard. The same hardware is available as the HL6-3 (3-3/4 inch), HL6-5 (5 inch), and HL6-7 (7 inch) for deeper stiles.
- Why is this hardware used in hospitals?
- Two reasons. The short throw angle means a door opens with a push or pull of a forearm, hip, or elbow when hands are full, and the dampened paddle is 50 percent quieter than the previous HL Series, which matters where patients are sleeping.
- Does it lock?
- No. The HL6 is a passage function - it latches but never locks, and the inside paddle is always free for immediate egress. For restrooms and patient bathrooms that need privacy, Schlage makes the PL7 and PL8, which add a thumbturn privacy mode with an opposite side emergency release.
- Is it handed?
- The hardware is non-handed and mounts in six positions - handles down, handles up, one up and one down, pointing away from the latch, or pointing toward the latch. Note that the E3 and E4 horizontal engraving codes are handed, so specify right or left hand for those.
- Can it go on a fire door?
- Yes. The HL6 is UL Listed for 3 hour fire doors up to 4 ft by 8 ft on single labeled metal or wood doors.
- What are the antimicrobial finishes?
- 626AM satin chrome and 630AM satin stainless steel are the antimicrobial versions of the two most commonly specified finishes, for facilities that want an antimicrobial treatment on high touch hardware.
- What do EN and EO do?
- They supply only one paddle. EN entrance only gives the pull handle for a door used for entry with no exit required, and EO exit only gives the push handle for a door used for exit where no entry is to be permitted.
- Which strike do I need?
- The standard 2-3/4 inch strike suits most frames. Specify the ASA 4-7/8 inch strike when the frame is prepped for an ASA cutout, or order both if the job has a mix.
- What does the engraving option add?
- PUSH and PULL lettering on the handles, so traffic reads the door correctly. Pick the code that matches the mounting position: E1 push up and pull down, E2 push up and pull up, E5 push down and pull up, E6 push down and pull down, or E3 and E4 for horizontal engraving.
- Will it fit my door?
- The HL6 is made for 1-3/4 inch doors. Other thicknesses are available from Schlage on request, so contact us if your door differs.
