The Schlage HL6-9050 combines HL6 push/pull hardware with the Schlage L Series heavy duty mortise lock in the 9050 entrance and office function (ANSI F04). It is the first locking, keyed function in the HL6 mortise line: the outside paddle is made inoperative by key or thumbturn, and once locked the latchbolt is retracted by the key or the inside paddle only.
That makes it the specification for offices, exam rooms, nurse stations, and back of house doors that staff need to secure at the end of a shift but walk through hands free all day. The outside paddle stays locked until it is unlocked by thumbturn or key, an auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed, and the inside paddle is always free for immediate egress whatever the lock state.
The rest is standard HL6 mortise: a 3/4 inch throw stainless steel latchbolt, an ASA strike, a UL Listing for 3 hour fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft, and dampened paddle action giving a proven 50 percent quieter operation than the previous generation. Available in 10 finishes including antimicrobial 626AM and 630AM.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does 9050 mean?
- It is the Schlage mortise lock function: 9050 entrance and office, ANSI F04. The outside paddle can be made inoperative by key or by the inside thumbturn.
- How does it actually lock?
- Turn the inside thumbturn, or use the key from outside, and the outside paddle stops retracting the latch. It stays that way until deliberately unlocked by thumbturn or key - it does not release when the door closes.
- Can I still get out when it is locked?
- Yes. The inside paddle is always free for immediate egress, no matter the lock state. Locking only stops entry from outside.
- Does it need a cylinder?
- Yes. The 9050 is a key operated function, so a mortise cylinder is part of the opening. Tell us your keyway and whether the cylinder should be keyed to an existing system, and we will confirm the right cylinder with the order.
- How is this different from the 9010 and 9040?
- Locking. The 9010 is passage and never locks. The 9040 is bath and bedroom privacy, thumbturn only with no key, releasing automatically when the door closes. The 9050 adds a key and holds its locked state until someone unlocks it.
- What does the auxiliary latch do?
- It deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed, so the latch cannot be pushed back out of the strike from the outside.
- Is it handed?
- The hardware is non-handed and mounts in five positions - handles down, handles up, one up and one down, or pointing away from the latch. Note that the E3 and E4 horizontal engraving codes are handed, so specify right or left hand for those.
- Can it go on a fire door?
- Yes. It is UL Listed for 3 hour fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft on single labeled metal or wood doors.
- Will it fit my door?
- It is made for 1-3/4 inch doors on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Other thicknesses are available from Schlage on request, so contact us if your door differs.
