The Schlage ND50 is the entrance and office function (ANSI F82) of the ND Series, Schlage heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lock. A key cylinder in the outside lever and a push button in the inside lever give you the classic office door: staff lock up on the way out with the button, and anyone with a key gets back in.
The behavior is worth reading closely, because it catches people out. Pushing the button on the inside lever makes the outside lever inoperative. The key outside does not lock the door - it only unlocks. Turning the key outside, or rotating the inside lever, retracts the latch and releases the button, so the door is left unlocked afterward. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
It ships on a deadlatch and takes conventional, FSIC, or SFIC cylinder formats, including less-cylinder options if you are supplying cores from an existing system. Conventional and FSIC default to the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway, and the lock can be keyed different, keyed alike, master keyed, or construction keyed.
The ND Series margin over the standard carries through: 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque (2.6x BHMA), 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull (8x BHMA), near zero droop and wobble after 16 million cycles (16x BHMA) with no set screws or O-rings, and latch retraction under 200 lb preload (4x BHMA). Nine lever designs, nine finishes, and a 10 year mechanical warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does ND50 mean?
- It is the Schlage function code for the entrance and office lock, ANSI F82. Key cylinder outside, push button inside, deadlatch.
- Can I lock the door with the key from outside?
- No, and this surprises people. On the ND50 the key outside does not lock. Locking is done with the push button on the inside lever. The key only unlocks. If you need to lock from the corridor with a key, that is a classroom function, not this one.
- Does the door stay locked after someone keys in?
- No. Turning the key outside releases the button as it retracts the latch, so the door is left unlocked. The same happens when someone rotates the inside lever. Whoever leaves last has to push the button again.
- Can people always get out?
- Yes. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, whether the button is pushed or not.
- Which cylinder option do I pick?
- Match your existing key system. P6 is a conventional 6-pin cylinder on the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway, which is the Schlage default. P is a conventional cylinder on the open Classic C keyway. Pick R for a 6-pin FSIC core, or L, J, or B to receive the lock less cylinder or less core when you are supplying your own from an existing system.
- Can these be keyed to my existing keys?
- Yes. Choose keyed alike to make a group open on one key, or master keyed to fold them into an existing system. Tell us your keyway and bitting or send a sample, and we will key them before they ship. Construction keying is also available.
- Can the inside lever be a different design?
- Yes. The inside lever can be specified the same as the outside or as any other ND lever design.
- Which latch do I need?
- The standard 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset covers most doors. Use a 3-3/4 inch latch for deeper stiles, and the 14-042 anti-friction fire deadlatch with its 3/4 inch throw on pairs of doors, which is also what the pair-door fire listings require.
- Does the lever choice matter for code?
- It can. For the California Fire Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude, and Boardwalk. Confirm the lever design against your local requirements.
- Is indicator trim available?
- Schlage offers indicator trim on this function, but only as a single sided option, and locks ordered with it fit 1-3/4 inch doors (spacer kits cover 1-3/8 to 1-11/16 inch). Contact us if you need it and we will quote it.
