The Schlage ND44 is the hospital privacy function of the ND Series, Schlage heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lock. A push button in the inside lever makes the outside lever inoperative, and the outside lever carries an emergency turn that staff rotate by hand to release it. It is non-keyed - privacy with no cylinder and no key system.
The emergency turn is what separates this from a standard privacy lock. Staff outside the room release the door without a key, a tool, or a screwdriver, which is why this function is specified on patient bathrooms, exam rooms, and behavioral and care areas where someone may need to be reached immediately.
It is also designed so the room cannot be left locked by accident. Rotating the inside lever retracts the latch and releases the button, unlocking the outside lever, and simply closing the door also unlocks it, preventing lock-out. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, and the springlatch is retracted by either lever whenever the lock is unlocked. Schlage indicator trim is available where staff need to read occupancy at a glance.
The ND Series margin over the standard carries through: 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque (2.6x BHMA), near zero droop and wobble after 16 million cycles (16x BHMA) with no set screws or O-rings, and latch retraction under 200 lb preload (4x BHMA). Nine lever designs, nine finishes, a 626AM antimicrobial option, and a 10 year mechanical warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does ND44 mean?
- It is the Schlage function code for the hospital privacy lock. A push button in the inside lever locks the outside lever, and an emergency turn in the outside lever releases it.
- How is this different from the ND40 bath and bedroom privacy lock?
- The outside release. The ND44 has an emergency turn that staff rotate by hand. The ND40 has a recessed slot that needs an emergency key or a small flat screwdriver. If seconds matter or staff will not be carrying a tool, the ND44 is the one to specify.
- Do I need an emergency key with this?
- No. The emergency turn is operated by hand, so there is nothing to buy, carry, or lose. That is the main practical advantage over the ND40.
- Can the room get locked by accident?
- No. Closing the door unlocks the outside lever, and rotating the inside lever retracts the latch and releases the button at the same time. Both behaviors exist specifically to prevent lock-out.
- Can people always get out?
- Yes. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, regardless of whether the button is pushed.
- Can I see whether the room is occupied?
- Yes, with Schlage indicator trim, offered on the ND44 in all standard lever designs and finishes. Note that locks ordered with indicator trim fit 1-3/4 inch doors, with separately sold spacer kits covering 1-3/8 to 1-11/16 inch doors.
- Where is it normally used?
- Patient bathrooms, exam and treatment rooms, and care areas where a room must be private but staff need to reach the occupant immediately without fetching anything.
- Does the lever choice matter for code?
- It can. For the California Fire Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude, and Boardwalk. Confirm the lever design against your local requirements.
- What door thicknesses and backsets does it fit?
- Standard is 1-5/8 to 2-1/8 inch doors on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Optional configurations cover 1-3/8 inch up to 6 inch doors, and 2-3/8, 3-3/4, and 5 inch backsets. Indicator trim versions have their own narrower range, noted above.
