The Schlage ND12 is the exit lock function (ANSI F89) of the ND Series, Schlage heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lock. The outside lever is always fixed and the latch is retracted by the inside lever only, with a deadlatch rather than a springlatch. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
It is non-keyed, and that is the point of the function. With a fixed outside lever and no cylinder, there is no way to enter from outside at all, not even with a key. The ND12 is for doors that exist purely to let people out: exit corridors, stair discharge into a controlled area, service exits, and back of house doors where entry is meant to happen somewhere else. If you need key entry from outside, the keyed storeroom functions are the ones to look at instead.
The ND Series margin over standard applies here as it does across the family. It resists 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, which is over 690 lbs at the end of a 4-1/2 inch lever and 2.6 times the BHMA requirement, restricts entry against 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull (8x BHMA), withstands 100 vertical impacts (20x BHMA), and shows near zero droop and wobble after 16 million cycles (16x BHMA) with no set screws or O-rings. That matters most on a fixed outside lever, which is exactly what gets pulled and hung on.
Choose from nine lever designs and nine finishes plus a 626AM antimicrobial coating, with a 10 year mechanical warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does ND12 mean?
- It is the Schlage function code for the exit lock, ANSI F89. The outside lever is always fixed and the latch is retracted by the inside lever only.
- Can I get in from outside with a key?
- No. The ND12 is non-keyed and the outside lever never retracts the latch, so there is no entry from outside at all. If you need key entry, specify a keyed ND function such as the storeroom instead.
- Can people always get out?
- Yes. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, which is the entire purpose of the function.
- How is this different from the ND10 passage latch?
- Direction and latch type. The ND10 has a springlatch and both levers retract the latch at all times, so the door passes freely both ways. The ND12 has a deadlatch and a fixed outside lever, so it only lets people out.
- What is the outside lever for if it does not work?
- It serves as a fixed pull and keeps the door looking like the rest of the hardware in the building. It is rigid by design and does not retract the latch.
- Why a deadlatch instead of a springlatch?
- A deadlatch resists the latch being pushed back out of the strike from outside, which matters on a door with no outside operation.
- Can I get a request to exit signal?
- Yes. The RX option is offered on the ND12, so the lock can signal the access control system when someone operates the inside lever. Specify RX under special options.
- Does the lever choice matter for code?
- It can. For the California Fire Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude, and Boardwalk. Confirm the lever design against your local requirements.
- Can it go on a fire door?
- Yes. It is UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 listed for a 3 hour A label single fire door up to 4 ft by 10 ft. Pairs of doors are covered at 8 ft by 8 ft for 3 hours, or 8 ft by 10 ft for 90 minutes, with the 3/4 inch latch option.
- What door thicknesses and backsets does it fit?
- Standard is 1-5/8 to 2-1/8 inch doors on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Optional configurations cover 1-3/8 inch up to 6 inch doors, and 2-3/8, 3-3/4, and 5 inch backsets.
