Linear Power Supplies

Linear power supplies produce exceptionally clean, low-noise DC, which is why many manufacturers of card readers and other sensitive access control electronics recommend them. Where a switching supply can introduce electrical noise that causes read errors on proximity readers, a linear supply's output stays steady, making it a safe choice for readers, electric strikes, and Magnalocks sharing a circuit.

BPS boxed power supplies deliver that power from a single lockable enclosure, with line voltage connected at screw terminals. Output is regulated and adjustable, with integral sealed lead-acid or gel cell battery charging for standby, Class 2 outputs that allow wire runs without conduit, and an interface to the fire alarm system. Model numbers read as voltage then amps, so the BPS-24-1 is a 24 volt, 1 amp supply and the BPS-12-3 a 12 volt, 3 amp supply, with larger units stepping up to higher currents and multiple outputs. BPSH versions run from 220 VAC input, including a dual-voltage 12 or 24 volt model, and CH versions are built for Chicago requirements. Size the supply for the total simultaneous load plus battery charging, and remember that linear supplies are heavier and less efficient than switching supplies of the same capacity.
