The Schlage ND91 is the Vandlgard entrance and office lock function (ANSI F82) of the ND Series, Schlage heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lock. It is the standard entrance and office function with Vandlgard locked lever protection built in.
When the lock is locked, Vandlgard lets the outside lever rotate freely up and down instead of resisting. That removes the leverage a vandal needs: excessive force cannot be transmitted into the chassis, which protects the internal components from the kind of damage that puts a lock out of service. On a door that gets hung on, kicked, or wrenched, it is the difference between a lock that survives and one that gets replaced.
The locking behavior is the familiar office arrangement. A key cylinder in the outside lever and a push button in the inside lever: push the button and the outside lever is inoperative, and the key outside does not lock, it only unlocks. Turning the key outside or rotating the inside lever retracts the latch and releases the button, leaving the door unlocked afterward. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
It takes conventional, FSIC, or SFIC cylinder formats on the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway, with 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque resistance (2.6x BHMA) and near zero droop and wobble after 16 million cycles (16x BHMA) behind it.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Vandlgard?
- Schlage locked lever protection. When the lock is locked, the outside lever rotates freely up and down rather than resisting. Because the lever gives, a vandal cannot apply excessive force to the chassis, which helps prevent damage to the internal components.
- Is the lock less secure because the lever moves?
- No. The lever turning freely does not retract the latch. The door stays locked exactly as it would on the standard function - the lever is simply disconnected while locked, instead of fighting the force applied to it.
- How is this different from the ND50?
- Only Vandlgard. The ND91 and the ND50 are both ANSI F82 entrance and office locks with identical locking behavior. The ND91 adds the locked lever protection.
- Where is it worth specifying?
- Doors that take abuse: school corridors, dormitories, public buildings, recreation facilities, and any opening where people hang on levers or force them. The cost difference is small next to replacing a damaged chassis.
- Can I lock the door with the key from outside?
- No. On this function the key outside does not lock. Locking is done with the push button on the inside lever, and the key only unlocks.
- Does the door stay locked after someone keys in?
- No. Turning the key outside releases the button as it retracts the latch, so the door is left unlocked. The same happens when someone rotates the inside lever.
- Can people always get out?
- Yes. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, whether the button is pushed or not.
- Which cylinder option do I pick?
- Match your existing key system. P6 is conventional on the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway, the Schlage default. P is conventional on the open Classic C keyway. Pick R for a 6-pin FSIC core, H for a refundable construction SFIC core, or L, J, or B to receive the lock less cylinder or less core.
- Which latch do I need?
- The standard 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset covers most doors. Use a 3-3/4 inch latch for deeper stiles, and the 14-042 anti-friction fire deadlatch with its 3/4 inch throw on pairs of doors.
- Does the lever choice matter for code?
- It can. For the California Fire Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude, and Boardwalk. Confirm the lever design against your local requirements.
