Wired Magnetic Contacts

The magnetic contact is the most installed device in the security trade. A reed switch on the frame, a magnet on the moving leaf, and the loop opens the moment the two separate. It is cheap, it lasts decades, and it fails in an obvious way, which is exactly what is wanted on a perimeter opening.

Selection comes down to three things. Mounting style: surface contacts screw or stick to the frame and suit retrofits, while recessed and press-fit contacts hide inside a drilled hole for a clean look on finished doors and windows. Gap rating: every contact publishes the distance at which it will open, and wide gap versions exist for warped doors, steel frames, and overhead doors where alignment cannot be held tightly. Switch type: a normally closed Form A reed covers most alarm zones, while Form C contacts add a transfer contact for auxiliary functions. Mount contacts on the opening edge rather than the hinge side, and keep steel-mount models on steel so the rated gap holds.
