High Security Contacts
A standard reed contact can be defeated by someone holding a strong magnet against the frame while the door opens. Where that matters, in government and military facilities, pharmacy and cash rooms, vaults, server rooms, and anywhere an insurance carrier or specification calls for it, the answer is a high security contact designed to detect that attack rather than be fooled by it.
Balanced magnetic switches use a biased magnetic field and multiple reeds, so the switch reports an alarm when an external magnet is introduced as well as when the door opens. Devices intended for this use are graded under UL 634, with Level 2 denoting the higher attack resistance, and are typically wired with armored cable so the run itself cannot be cut or shorted without notice. Heavy-duty overhead door contacts belong to the same family: floor or frame mounted, built to survive a rolling steel door, and paired with a matched magnet and bracket assembly that holds alignment through years of travel. Replacement magnets and brackets are stocked separately, since the moving half is what usually takes the damage.
