A hold-up device exists for one moment: an employee facing a robbery who needs to summon help without the offender knowing. Everything about the design follows from that. The alarm is silent at the premises, the switch is placed where a hand naturally rests under a counter or at a teller station, and activation is deliberate enough that it is not tripped by a knee or a broom handle.

Most are latching, meaning once operated they stay in alarm until reset with a key, so there is no question afterward about whether the signal was sent. Two-finger and dual-action designs require a specific motion to activate, which is what keeps accidental trips down in a busy retail environment. Because these are life-safety-adjacent and often required by the central station's protocol, they are typically wired on their own supervised zone using shielded cable on longer runs, and tested on a schedule agreed with the monitoring company. False activations carry real cost, so placement and staff training matter as much as the hardware.
