Request-to-Exit Sensors

On an access controlled door, the reader handles people coming in. The request-to-exit sensor handles everyone going out. Mounted above the door on the secure side, it sees a person approaching from inside, releases the lock, and at the same time shunts the door position contact so a legitimate exit is not reported as a forced door. Without one, every trip out of the building looks like an alarm.

These are passive infrared detectors tuned for a narrow pattern directly over the opening, which keeps them from triggering on traffic passing by in a corridor. Practical selection comes down to fit and function: a finish that suits the frame, usually white or black, relay contacts rated for the lock or access panel being driven, and adjustable timing so the door stays released long enough for someone carrying boxes but relocks promptly after. Note that a request-to-exit device is a convenience and shunt mechanism, not a substitute for the free egress that fire and life safety codes require, so confirm the door's hardware meets code independently.
