The Schlage ND53 is the entrance lock function (ANSI F109) of the ND Series, Schlage heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lock. A key cylinder in the outside lever pairs with a push/turn button in the inside lever, giving the opening two different locking behaviors from one lock, on a deadlatch.
Push the button and the outside lever is locked, but it releases the moment anyone turns the key outside or rotates the inside lever - convenient for a door that should relock each time it is used. Push and turn the button and the lock holds: the key outside or the inside lever still retracts the latch, but the outside lever stays locked until someone rotates the inside button back to its start position. That is the setting for a door you want to leave secured.
Schlage attaches one caution to the push/turn mode, and it is worth reading before you specify this function. Leaving the room without fully releasing the push/turn button can lock people out, because the door stays locked behind them. Egress itself is never affected - the inside lever is always free for immediate egress - but anyone who walks out on a turned button will need a key to get back in.
It takes conventional, FSIC, or SFIC cylinder formats, including less-cylinder options for existing systems, and defaults to the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway. Note that as with the other ND entrance functions, the key outside does not lock - it only unlocks.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does ND53 mean?
- It is the Schlage function code for the entrance lock, ANSI F109. Key cylinder outside, push/turn button inside, deadlatch.
- What is the difference between pushing and push-turning the button?
- How long the lock holds. Pushed, the outside lever unlocks the next time anyone turns the key or rotates the inside lever. Pushed and turned, the outside lever stays locked through all of that, and only unlocks when someone rotates the inside button back to its start position.
- What is the lock-out caution about?
- Schlage warns that leaving the room without fully releasing the push/turn button can lock people out. If you turn the button and then walk out, the door is locked behind you and takes a key to reopen. Getting out is never a problem - the inside lever is always free - but getting back in will be.
- Can I lock the door with the key from outside?
- No. On the ND53 the key outside does not lock. Locking is done with the push/turn button on the inside lever. The key only unlocks.
- Can people always get out?
- Yes. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress in every button position.
- How is this different from the ND50?
- The button. The ND50 has a plain push button with one behavior. The ND53 has a push/turn button, adding a hold-locked mode on the same lock. Choose the ND53 when the same door sometimes needs to relock on each use and sometimes needs to stay locked.
- Which cylinder option do I pick?
- Match your existing key system. P6 is a conventional 6-pin cylinder on the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway, the Schlage default. P is a conventional cylinder on the open Classic C keyway. Pick R for a 6-pin FSIC core, or L, J, or B to receive the lock less cylinder or less core when supplying your own.
- Can these be keyed to my existing keys?
- Yes. Choose keyed alike to make a group open on one key, or master keyed to fold them into an existing system. Tell us your keyway and bitting or send a sample. Construction keying is also available.
- Which latch do I need?
- The standard 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset covers most doors. Use a 3-3/4 inch latch for deeper stiles, and the 14-042 anti-friction fire deadlatch with its 3/4 inch throw on pairs of doors, which is also what the pair-door fire listings require.
- Does the lever choice matter for code?
- It can. For the California Fire Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude, and Boardwalk. Confirm the lever design against your local requirements.
