The Bosch DS160 is a high-performance passive infrared (PIR) request-to-exit motion detector with 8 x 10-foot coverage, two Form C relay contacts, adjustable door monitoring, and an integrated audible sounder for commercial access control systems. Operating on 12-30 VAC/DC, it features sequential logic input (SLI), selectable fail-safe or fail-secure relay operation, and an adjustable activation timer from 0.5 to 64 seconds. The light gray detector supports wall or ceiling mounting, includes an activation LED and tamper contacts, and is UL 294 Listed for access control applications.

Bosch DS160 High-Performance PIR Request-to-Exit Motion Detector with Sounder

The Bosch DS160 is a high-performance passive infrared request-to-exit (REX) detector designed to initiate controlled door release when an occupant approaches an electronically secured exit. Part of the Bosch DS160 Series, this light gray motion detector provides 8 x 10 feet (2.4 x 3 meters) of typical detection coverage using a configurable PIR sensing pattern. When motion is detected, the DS160 activates its relay outputs to signal a compatible access control panel or operate an appropriately rated electric locking circuit. Unlike basic request-to-exit sensors, the DS160 incorporates door position monitoring, an integrated audible warning sounder, sequential logic input, and programmable relay timing to support more advanced door control applications. The detector is designed for commercial offices, schools, healthcare facilities, retail establishments, institutional buildings, and other indoor locations requiring automatic exit detection at access-controlled doors.

The DS160 operates on 12-30 VAC or VDC power and incorporates two single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) Form C relay contacts, each rated at 1 amp at 30 VAC or VDC for resistive loads. These outputs provide connections for compatible access control equipment and electric locking hardware, including fail-safe electromagnetic locks. The detector supports selectable fail-safe or fail-secure relay behavior during power loss, allowing installers to configure its switching response according to the locking system and applicable egress requirements. An adjustable relay latch timer provides eight selectable intervals from 0.5 to 64 seconds, with resettable accumulative and non-resettable timing modes. The DS160 also incorporates an adjustable audible sounder that can provide a warning when the monitored door remains open beyond the configured interval or when a selected door monitoring condition occurs. An activation LED provides visual confirmation of detection, while normally closed tamper contacts allow compatible monitoring equipment to identify unauthorized access to the detector housing.

The Bosch DS160 features a Sequential Logic Input (SLI) that supports conditional motion activation using an additional detection or access control device. This function allows installers to require a qualifying external signal before the PIR detector activates its release relay, helping reduce unauthorized activation attempts through or underneath a secured doorway. The remote input can also be configured for keycard-controlled relay activation, direct sounder operation, or door contact monitoring, depending on the selected programming switches and wiring arrangement. When connected to compatible normally closed door contacts, the DS160 can determine whether the door has opened or closed and adjust its relay timing or audible warning behavior accordingly. The detector also incorporates internally adjustable vertical lens positioning and removable masking wedges that allow portions of its detection pattern to be excluded. These features help installers focus motion detection on the intended exit approach area while limiting activation from nearby pedestrian traffic or movement outside the secured opening.

The Bosch DS160 features a high-impact ABS plastic enclosure measuring approximately 1.8 inches high, 6.75 inches wide, and 1.75 inches deep (45 x 171 x 44 mm). Its low-profile design supports wall mounting above the door or ceiling mounting near the exit, with detection coverage determined by mounting height, lens orientation, and masking configuration. Bosch specifies a maximum mounting height of 15 feet (4.6 meters), allowing the detector to accommodate different commercial doorway and ceiling arrangements. Electrical terminals accept 14-26 AWG conductors, while the optional Bosch TP160 light gray trim plate supports installation over a standard single-gang electrical box. The detector operates in ambient temperatures from -20 F to +120 F (-29 C to +49 C), with UL-listed installations restricted to 32 F through 120 F (0 C to 49 C). The DS160 is UL 294 Listed for access control system applications and must be connected to compatible access control and locking equipment. Unlike the Bosch DS161, which provides the same primary functions in a black enclosure, the DS160 features a light gray finish. Compared with the simpler Bosch DS150i request-to-exit detector, the DS160 adds door monitoring, audible warning, sequential logic, and more advanced relay control functions. Its combination of configurable PIR coverage, dual Form C relays, adjustable timing, integrated sounder, door monitoring, and conditional exit detection makes it suitable for professionally installed commercial access control systems. The DS160 is not intended to serve as a standalone access control system or the sole means of emergency egress; complete installations must satisfy applicable building, fire, and life-safety requirements.
