The Schlage ND172 is double dummy trim from the ND Series: fixed levers on both sides of the door, with no latch and no chassis. Neither lever operates anything. It is mounted where a door needs pulls on both faces, or where an inactive leaf needs trim that matches the working ND Series hardware elsewhere on the opening.
Typical uses are the inactive leaf of a pair, closet and cabinet doors held shut by a catch or magnet, and any door where the visual line of ND levers has to continue across an opening that does not latch. Because it is trim on both faces, it reads from either side as a normal lever set.
An optional blank latch plate kit covers the latch prep on a door that previously carried an operating lock, so a retrofit does not leave an open mortise in the door edge. The trim takes the same nine ND Series lever designs and nine finishes plus the 626AM antimicrobial coating, so it suites exactly with the ND10, ND12, and keyed ND functions nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is double dummy trim?
- Fixed levers on both sides of the door that operate nothing. There is no latch and no lock chassis. The levers are there to give the door grips and to match the look of the working hardware around it.
- What is the difference between ND172 and ND170?
- How many sides. The ND172 is double dummy trim with fixed levers on both sides. The ND170 is single dummy trim, a fixed lever on one side only.
- Will the door latch or lock?
- No. The ND172 has no latch and no chassis, so it neither latches nor locks. The door has to be held closed by something else, such as a catch, a magnet, or flush bolts on an inactive leaf.
- I am replacing a real lock. What about the hole in the door edge?
- Order the blank latch plate kit, part 47269199. It supplies a 1-1/8 by 2-1/4 inch blank plate and two screws to cover the latch prep. Metal doors are drilled and tapped for number 8-32 screws; wood doors take a 1/8 inch pilot.
- Where is it normally used?
- On the inactive leaf of a pair, on closet and cabinet doors, and anywhere a door needs pulls on both faces with matching trim rather than an operating lock.
- Will it match my other ND levers?
- Yes. It is offered in the same nine ND Series lever designs and nine finishes as the operating ND locks, so trim reads consistently across an opening or a corridor.
- How does it mount?
- The outside housing goes on first, then the inside housing is secured to it with two mounting screws through the door. Each rose aligns by dimple and groove and rotates until it stops, then each lever pushes on until the lever catch engages. A door prep template is included.
- Can the levers be removed later?
- Yes. Insert the included pin wrench, push against the lever catch, and pull the lever off. Useful for servicing or swapping a damaged lever without replacing the whole assembly.
- Is there an antimicrobial option?
- Yes, an antimicrobial coating on the 626 satin chrome finish, ordered as 626AM.
