Security Door Controls
The SDC EP17624 is a 600 lb holding force explosion-proof electromagnetic door lock designed for Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations where flammable gases and vapors may be present. Operating on 24 VDC with a 250 mA current draw, this single magnetic lock features an epoxy-sealed, corrosion-resistant aluminum housing with a 628 dull aluminum finish and side conduit connection. It incorporates integrated door position status (DPS) monitoring, voltage and current spike protection, and an interlocking quick-mount assembly for secure installation. UL classified for Class I, Division 2 hazardous environments and listed to UL 228, the EP17624 is suitable for chemical processing plants, refineries, clean rooms, and industrial facilities requiring electrically controlled door security in designated hazardous areas.
The SDC EP17624 is a heavy-duty, explosion-proof electromagnetic door lock providing 600 pounds of holding force for secure access control in hazardous industrial environments. Manufactured by Security Door Controls (SDC), this single-door magnetic lock is specifically engineered for Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations where flammable gases or vapors may be present under abnormal operating conditions. Its specialized construction minimizes the risk of electrical sparks or arcs within the lock assembly igniting the surrounding atmosphere. The EP17624 is particularly suited for chemical processing facilities, petroleum refineries, pharmaceutical manufacturing areas, clean rooms, and industrial storage facilities where conventional electromagnetic locks may not meet hazardous-location requirements.
The EP17624 features an explosion-proof, epoxy-sealed electromagnetic assembly housed in corrosion-resistant aluminum with a 628 dull aluminum finish. The lock incorporates a side-mounted conduit connection and an enclosed terminal chamber to accommodate electrical wiring in accordance with applicable hazardous-location installation requirements. An interlocking quick-mount assembly helps installers securely position the lock, while integrated voltage and current spike protection helps protect the electromagnetic locking mechanism against electrical transients. Designed for push-side door mounting, the EP17624 offers a specialized security solution for facilities requiring dependable electromagnetic locking in potentially explosive atmospheres. For pull-side, top-jamb applications, SDC offers the separate EP17624TJ model with an included Z mounting bracket.
The SDC EP17624 operates on a nominal 24 VDC power supply with a 10% input voltage tolerance and draws approximately 250 mA at 24 VDC, equivalent to 6 watts of operating power. The manufacturer specifies connection to an NEC/NFPA 70 Class 2 supply circuit rated for 24 VDC with a minimum available output of 500 mA and 12 watts. An appropriately rated SDC 600 Series power controller is recommended for compatible installations. The lock also includes an integrated single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) door position status switch, rated at 100 mA at 30 VDC for resistive loads. This monitoring contact enables compatible access control and security systems to determine whether the door is open or closed, supporting door status supervision and facility security monitoring.
The EP17624 magnetic lock measures 10.5 inches long, 2 inches high, and 1.75 inches deep, with an armature plate measuring 7.125 inches long, 1.75 inches high, and 0.75 inches deep. Its aluminum construction provides resistance to corrosion in demanding industrial settings, while the magnetic locking mechanism delivers 600 pounds of holding force when properly installed and energized. Installation requires careful alignment between the magnetic lock and armature plate to maintain maximum holding efficiency. The side conduit entry accommodates a 1/2-14 NPT conduit fitting, and the integrated terminal connections support installation according to the manufacturer's wiring instructions. A minimum 2.5-inch mounting reveal is required for the specified push-side installation. These mechanical and electrical characteristics make the EP17624 suitable for specialized door security applications requiring both hazardous-location protection and controlled access.
The SDC EP17624 is UL classified for Class I, Division 2 hazardous locations and listed to UL 228 for door closers and holders, with or without integral smoke detectors. The manufacturer identifies compatibility with specified hazardous atmospheres, including acetone, benzene, methyl ethyl ketone, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate, normal hexane, methyl alcohol, and other listed substances. The lock's marked operating temperature does not exceed 185 F (85 C), with a maximum permitted ambient temperature of 104 F (40 C). Supply conductors must have insulation rated for at least 167 F (75 C). Installation must comply with the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), applicable local regulations, and the manufacturer's hazardous-location requirements. When integrated into a properly engineered access control system with suitable power supplies and release devices, the EP17624 provides a durable, specialized electromagnetic locking solution for industrial facilities requiring secure access control in classified hazardous environments.
