The Schlage ND94 is the Vandlgard classroom lock function (ANSI F84) of the ND Series, Schlage heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lock. A key cylinder in the outside lever locks and unlocks that lever, a plain lever sits inside, and Vandlgard locked lever protection is built in.
Vandlgard is the reason to pick this over the standard classroom lock. When the door is locked, the outside lever rotates freely up and down rather than resisting, so a student cannot apply excessive force into the chassis. On a school corridor door that gets hung on, yanked, and leaned against every passing period, that protects the internal components from the abuse that otherwise takes locks out of service.
Schlage classifies this function as exterior lockdown only, and the name is the spec. Locking the door means stepping into the corridor and turning the key - it cannot be locked from inside the room. If your lockdown policy requires securing the door without opening it, the function you want is the ND98 Vandlgard classroom security lock (ANSI F110), which locks from inside and keeps the same lever protection. Ask us and we will quote it instead.
The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, and in the unlocked state either lever retracts the latch. It takes conventional, FSIC, or SFIC cylinder formats on the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Vandlgard?
- Schlage locked lever protection. When the lock is locked, the outside lever rotates freely up and down rather than resisting. Because the lever gives, excessive force cannot be applied to the chassis, which helps prevent damage to the internal components.
- Is the lock less secure because the lever moves?
- No. The lever turning freely does not retract the latch. The door stays locked exactly as on the standard function - the lever is simply disconnected while locked rather than fighting the force applied to it.
- Why is Vandlgard worth it on a classroom door?
- Because classroom levers take constant abuse. A locked lever that gives instead of resisting is far harder to damage, and replacing a wrecked chassis costs more than the option did.
- Can I lock the room from inside?
- No. Schlage classifies the ND94 as exterior lockdown only, so someone has to step into the corridor and turn the key. If your lockdown procedure requires locking without opening the door, specify the ND98 Vandlgard classroom security lock (ANSI F110) instead.
- Can people always get out?
- Yes. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, locked or not. Locking only stops entry from the corridor.
- Can students change the locked state?
- No. There is no button or turn on the inside lever, so the locked state can only be changed with the key from outside.
- How is this different from the ND70?
- Only Vandlgard. The ND94 and the ND70 are both ANSI F84 classroom locks with identical key behavior. The ND94 adds the locked lever protection.
- Which cylinder option do I pick?
- Match your existing key system. P6 is conventional on the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway, the Schlage default. P is conventional on the open Classic C keyway. Pick R for a 6-pin FSIC core, H for a refundable construction SFIC core, or L, J, or B to receive the lock less cylinder or less core.
- Can a whole school be keyed on one system?
- Yes. Choose master keyed to fold the locks into an existing system, or keyed alike for a group that should open on one key. Send us your keyway and bitting or a sample key. Construction keying is also available.
- Which latch do I need?
- The standard 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset covers most doors. Use a 3-3/4 inch latch for deeper stiles, and the 14-042 anti-friction fire deadlatch with its 3/4 inch throw on pairs of doors.
