Home Electrical Safety Checklist

  •  Don’t overload outlets or power strips, and never “daisy-chain” strips together.
  •  Replace frayed or damaged cords; never run cords under rugs or across doorways.
  •  Use GFCI outlets in kitchens, baths, and outdoors; consider AFCI breakers.
  •  Protect electronics with quality surge protectors.
  •  Match bulb wattage to the fixture, and keep devices away from water.
  •  Unplug heat-producing appliances when not in use.
  •  Use tamper-resistant outlets and cord covers around children and pets.
  •  Call a licensed electrician for flickering lights, warm or buzzing outlets, frequent breaker trips, or a burning smell.
In an Emergency

Electric Shock First Aid

Do not touch a person who is still in contact with a live electrical source — you can be shocked too. If you can, turn off the power at the breaker or unplug the source. Call 911. Once it’s safe, check whether the person is breathing and begin CPR if you’re trained and they aren’t. Don’t move them unless they’re in danger, and treat any burns once help is on the way. Even minor-seeming shocks can cause internal injury — seek medical care.
