What Is Carbon Monoxide — and Why Is It Dangerous?
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a single carbon atom bonded to a single oxygen atom. That one missing oxygen atom (versus carbon dioxide) makes all the difference: CO is highly toxic. It has about the same density as air — in fact, it’s very slightly lighter — so it mixes evenly throughout a room rather than simply sinking or rising. Because it has no smell, color, or taste, you cannot detect it with your senses.
CO is dangerous because it binds to the hemoglobin in your blood more than 200 times more readily than oxygen does. As CO takes oxygen’s place, it starves your muscles, organs, and brain of the oxygen they need — causing tissue damage and, at high concentrations, death within minutes.
Common Sources in the Home
CO is produced whenever fuel burns without enough oxygen — especially in closed spaces without fresh air. Common sources include:
- • Furnaces, boilers, and water heaters
- • Gas ovens, stoves, and ranges
- • Indoor fireplaces and wood stoves
- • Portable generators
- • Gas or charcoal grills
- • Vehicles running in an attached garage
Symptoms of CO Poisoning
CO poisoning is often mistaken for the flu or other illnesses, which makes it hard to recognize — and people who are asleep or intoxicated may be poisoned before they ever notice. Watch for:

- • Nausea or vomiting
- • Trouble with balance or coordination
- • Chest pain or breathing difficulty
- • Confusion, agitation, or memory loss
- • In severe cases: seizures, fainting, loss of consciousness

What to Do in a CO Emergency
Get everyone — including pets — outside to fresh air immediately. Open doors and windows on your way out if you can do so quickly. Call 911 from outside and tell them you suspect carbon monoxide and whether anyone needs medical help. Do not go back inside until emergency responders say it is safe. If someone has lost consciousness, get them outdoors and let responders administer oxygen and CPR.
Preventing CO Poisoning
The single most important step is installing working CO alarms — they detect what your senses cannot. Pair them with safe appliance habits.

- • Test monthly; replace batteries as directed

- • Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows — keep it at least 20 feet from the home
- • Never use a grill, camp stove, or oven to heat your home
