Hanchett Entry Systems (HES)
HES SMB Series electric strike solutions offer a Grade 2 surface-mount locking system designed for double doors without a mullion. This series provides a secure, no-cut installation on the inactive door leaf to accommodate rim exit devices up to 1/2” latch throw. The SMB Series combines a robust surface mounting box with a compatible HES electric strike, creating a convenient dual-door access control solution that maintains security and fire-life safety standards. Facilities choose the SMB Series for its easy retrofit installation and reliable performance in commercial, institutional, and retail environments.
Specifically, the HES SMB Series is also designed to meet ANSI/BHMA Grade 2 specifications, with a static hold force of at least 1,000 lbs, as well as impact resistance of at least 50 ft-lbs. The strikes and the surface-mount latches are designed as a tamper-resistant device to help protect it from prying or attack. Each SMB Series strike is field-selectable to operate as either fail-safe or fail-secure, allowing for safe unlocked access to an opening during a power loss, or secure access depending on the needs of the opening. The strikes are provided with the option of a dual voltage (12 or 24 VDC) circuit as standard, with a solenoid mounted in a position to provide reliable, continuous-duty operation. The SMB Series strikes are non-handed installations to allow for right- or left-hand doors with no additional fabrication. Each strike is easy to adjust for a variety of situations, including: to assist in mounting to a misaligned door, to relieve pre-load pressure after door installation, or simply to ensure the latchbolt will properly engage after installation if door gaps (and weather-stripping) create tension.
In application, the SMB Series shines in pair-of-door scenarios where adding a fixed mullion is undesirable. The surface-mount box attaches to the inactive door leaf, allowing a rim exit device’s latch from the active door to secure into the strike box. This makes it ideal for glass storefront double doors, exit doors in retail or offices, and retrofitting older double-door entrances. Installers appreciate that no frame cutting is required – simply mount the SMB box and align it with the exit device’s Pullman latch. The black powder-coated housing offers a low-profile look and shields the strike mechanism, which is especially useful in applications where aesthetics and vandal-resistance are important. The SMB Series is compatible with popular HES surface strikes (e.g. the 9400, 9500, 9600, 9700 series) and even legacy Folger Adam rim strikes, making it a flexible choice for various door systems.
The HES SMB Series provides a cleaner and more secure alternative to traditional double-door locking systems. Rather than installing a vertical rod device on each door or adding a post or aftermarket mullion, the SMB solution allows one door leaf to be unrestricted, while providing secure latching onto one door leaf. This means that the full opening width remains preserved to facilitate the movement of equipment or furniture using double doors, unlike a mullion fixed to its vertical position. The SMB completely improves the earlier generation of surface strikes by adding multi-point adjustability and upgrades in strength to a higher grade that exceeds basic Grade 2, or in some configurations hovers around Grade 1 holding forces. Overall, the HES SMB Series provides an adaptable, high-value potential upgrade for facilities seeking improvements to double door security with minimal changes to the doors, offering a higher level of reliability.
