The Schlage ND82 is the institution lock function (ANSI F87) of the ND Series, Schlage heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lock. It has a lever with a key cylinder on both sides of the door on a deadlatch, and both levers are always fixed. The key in either lever retracts the latch only.
Important: this function does not provide free egress. Neither lever ever operates the latch, so passing through the door in either direction requires a key, every time. Schlage states that double cylinder locks on any door in any structure used for egress are a life safety hazard in times of emergency, and that their use is not recommended. Installation should be in accordance with existing codes only. Confirm with your authority having jurisdiction before specifying this function on any opening.
Where controlled movement in both directions is permitted, the ND82 is the most restrictive mechanical function in the ND line. There is no button, no turn, and no unlocked state for anyone to set, so the opening cannot be left usable without a key under any circumstances.
It takes conventional, FSIC, or SFIC cylinder formats, two cylinders required, on the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway. Construction matches the rest of the series: 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque resistance (2.6x BHMA) and near zero droop and wobble after 16 million cycles (16x BHMA).

Frequently Asked Questions
- What does ND82 mean?
- It is the Schlage function code for the institution lock, ANSI F87. Both levers are always fixed and a key in either lever retracts the latch only.
- Can people get out without a key?
- No. Both levers are always fixed, so this function does not provide free egress. Schlage states that double cylinder locks on doors used for egress are a life safety hazard in an emergency and that their use is not recommended. Check with your authority having jurisdiction before putting this function on any door.
- When is this function appropriate?
- Only where controlled movement in both directions is permitted by the codes that apply to the building, and installation must be in accordance with those codes. If the opening sits on an egress path, a function that keeps the inside lever free is the correct choice.
- What should I use instead on an egress door?
- The ND80 storeroom lock secures the door against entry while keeping the inside lever always free for immediate egress. For a secured room with lockdown from inside, the ND78 classroom security lock also keeps egress free.
- How is this different from the ND66 store lock?
- Whether an unlocked state exists. On the ND66 a key locks or unlocks both levers, so the door can be left working normally. On the ND82 there is no unlocked state at all - both levers are permanently fixed and the key only ever retracts the latch.
- Does it need two cylinders?
- Yes. It is a double cylinder lock, so a cylinder or core is required on each side. Choose C, J, or B to receive it less cylinders and supply your own from an existing system.
- Which cylinder option do I pick?
- Match your existing key system. P6 is conventional on the patented Everest 29 S123 keyway, the Schlage default. P is conventional on the open Classic C keyway. Pick R for 6-pin FSIC cores or H for refundable construction SFIC cores.
- Which latch do I need?
- The standard 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset covers most doors. Use a 3-3/4 inch latch for deeper stiles, and the 14-042 anti-friction fire deadlatch with its 3/4 inch throw on pairs of doors.
- Does the lever choice matter for code?
- It can. For the California Fire Code, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude, and Boardwalk. Confirm the lever design against your local requirements.
