A distinctive element of escape devices is the patented "Starwheel" bolt, which interlocks the door to the frame. When the door closes, the "Starwheel" bolt activates. The starwheel bolt and interlocking noseguard close around the strike. The starwheel bolt is secured to the strike when the deadlocking slide springs into action. The deadlocking slide retracts when the pushbar is depressed, allowing the door to unlock from the strike.
