Carbon monoxide (CO) is very similar to carbon dioxide (CO2), except its molecular structure contains one less oxygen atom. Carbon monoxide gas is attracted to oxygen atoms. When you breathe in carbon monoxide, the gas clings to oxygen atoms in your bloodstream, thus preventing the hemoglobin in your blood from gathering enough oxygen. Accordingly, exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide can be dangerous, and even fatal in some cases.
