What is tandem interconnect on my GE Security 260-CO carbon monoxide detector?

Tandem interconnect lets users wire multiple 260-CO detectors an electrical loop in a residential or commercial facility.

When an alarm goes off, the corresponding 260-CO detector is switched off its normal power supply, and then reverse polarity engages from the appliance circuit. Accordingly, all other 260-CO sirens wired to the loop will activate and alarms will sound simultaneously. The detector responsible for triggering the alarm will continue to sound its 85 dB siren, but it will also blink red. The other detectors wired in tandem will sound, but won't blink red.
