What is the range of a Honeywell motion sensor?

Last Updated: 11/11/2013
Most Honeywell motion sensors have a detection range of up to 30 feet.

The listed range for each motion detector is directly related to its mounting height.  Reference the detector's installation guide for information regarding the height the detector is designed to be mounted.  Once the detector is mounted, test it by walking around the room to make sure the sensor is working properly.

How motion sensors work...

Passive infra-red (PIR) technology is used by a majority of Honeywell motion sensors to map out different zones within the detection area.  These zones are assigned to detect at differing depths.  Some zones are assigned to monitor for motion ten feet from the sensor; other zones detect motion thirty feet from the sensor.  The detection zones fan out from the sensor at a 90 degree angle.

Different motion detectors also have different detection patterns.  A detection pattern is the shape of the area that a specific motion sensor can monitor.  Some motion sensors can monitor an entire room, while some sensors have a narrower, curtain pattern.  Typically, curtain pattern sensors are designed for use in entryways.
