Can I throw away an old sealed lead acid alarm battery?

NO. Doing so is illegal in many states.

Sealed Lead Batteries are made up of some environmentally unfriendly components, including lead and electrolytes, that are highly toxic. Recycling old batteries instead of merely throwing them out will protect the environment from unnecessary battery waste. That's why all SLA batteries should be disposed of according to the specific standards and practices of your state. Failing to do so is actually illegal. Go to the Environmental Protection Agency's website to find out more. Here's another good reason for recycling that old alarm battery -- nearly all of the lead acid inside the battery can be treated and reused in future batteries.
